Governor, CM for bridging gap between lab-land to enhance agri. production
Jammu, Mar 28- Emphasizing the importance of bridging the gap between lab to land to bring about transformation of the agricultural sector in Jammu and Kashmir, the Governor, N. N. Vohra and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, have asked the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SKUAT) to ensure that the latest agri-practices and technologies are transferred to the field so as to enhance productivity and incomes of agriculture households. They said that there is a tremendous scope for agriculture and allied activities in the State which require pooling of resources and sharing technical know-how to achieve the crucial goal of self-sufficiency in agriculture production.
The Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing the 3rd meeting of the University Council of the SKUAST, Jammu here on Saturday.
The Governor stressed the need for effective linkage between research institutions like SKUAST and the agriculture extension network (T&V Program) of the State Government, to unlock the vast potential in the agriculture and allied sectors for generation of self-employment opportunities. For this, it will be crucial to translate agriculture research into on-ground effort, particularly in the areas of vegetable and mushroom cultivation, poultry rearing, beekeeping, floriculture and varied other such sectors all of which have a ready market and high potential of generating employment avenues.
The Governor referred to his recent visit to the SKUAST, Jammu and said that the varsity has sophisticated equipments and facilities to carry out quality research. This, he said, could be optimally utilized for the over all benefit of the farming community and bringing excellence in the agriculture sector.
Saying that in the present era of globalization there is a greater need for establishing links and collaboration in the research and development programs with the reputed international agri-institutions and research centres, the Governor emphasized that immediate steps are required to be taken in this direction.
The Governor said that the decision of the University to establish a Bio-Technology Division would prove highly beneficial in the long run to keep pace with new trends and research advancement taking place constantly in the field of genetics.
The Chief Minister, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University, observed that there is a lot of pressure on land resources and, as such, the focus of researchers should be on increasing the per unit productivity.
Highlighting the scope for diversification of the cropping pattern, the Chief Minister said that the State’s agro-climatic conditions offer greater potential for the cultivation of cash crops like vegetables, mushroom, flowers, saffron, zeera and different varieties of fresh and dry fruits. This aspect needs to be underlined for integrated development, he said.
The Chief Minister said that the Government would be providing all possible support to the SKUAST in their pursuit to strengthen the agriculture and allied sectors in the State and open new vistas of economic progress.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. B. Mishra in his power point presentation gave details of the academics, research and extension activities of the SKUAST, Jammu, adding that the varsity is emerging as one of the best institutions in the country. He said that six Krishi Vigyan Kendras at Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri, Bhadarwah, Reasi and Kathua have been established under the extension programme, adding that many such Kendras are in the pipeline.
Dr. Mishra said that two varieties each of Basmati rice, wheat, Raya and Toria, three varieties of Desi Gram and one variety of Gobhi Sarson, have been released by the SKUAST, Jammu, while as seven more such new varieties are in the pipeline.
The Vice Chancellor said that the Library Block of the SKUAST with more than 22,000 books was one of the top five such libraries in the country.
The meeting took a number of decisions pertaining to academics, research, extension and financial matters during the threadbare discussions.

Taneja, Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production, Sonali Kumar, Principal Secretary to Governor, B. B. Vyas, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Sudhanshu Pandey and Registrar, SKUAST, Jammu, Dr. R. K. Sharma were among those who participated in the meeting
