Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 17: Ghulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party faced a significant setback in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Despite attracting large crowds, Azad's party failed to make a meaningful impact in the Valley, losing all three Lok Sabha seats it contested. This defeat reflects the electorate's disapproval of regional parties and their leaders, including Azad and Engineer Rashid.
The National Conference-Congress alliance emerged victorious, winning 47 seats and leading in another. This alliance trumped the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had abolished Article 370 in 2019. Azad's downfall is a notable development, given his history as a Congress stalwart and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Azad's leadership skills and strategic thinking earned him key positions in the government, including Deputy Minister of Law, Justice, and Company Affairs, and later, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Civil Aviation.
His tenure as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008 was marked by significant development initiatives, showcasing his ability to govern effectively.
However, his downfall began when in 2022, Azad resigned from the Congress party, citing the destruction of the consultative process by Rahul Gandhi. This move marked a significant shift in his political career, as he went on to form his own party, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party.
