UDHAMPUR, Oct 18: Government College for women Udhampur today organized an inter-house mehndi competition in the college premises.
The event was organized by the student welfare committee and Heritage club to commemorate the festival of Karva Chauth largely celebrated in North India.
The event started with the formal welcome of principal of the college, Dr. Nalini Pathania by convener student welfare committee, Prof. Swarna Bhougal (HOD Political science) by presenting her a floral token of respect.
In her opening remarks, the Principal appealed to the students and staff to uphold their cultural identity by celebrating such events. She also remarked that mehndi or henna has many cultural and symbolic meanings and is applied in Indian weddings and other celebrations. Mehndi symbolizes good luck and positive spirits. It is believed that the longer the mehndi color lasts, the luckier the couple will be.
While speaking on the occasion convener student's welfare committee motivated the students on the scientific aspect of mehndi application as it helps in stress relieving, headache and fever. It is applied on the hands and feet, which have many nerve endings.
As many as 50 students Participated in the event, Where Manvi, Asma and Nancy were judged 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Dr. Seema Sharma (HOD Music) Dr. Indu Khajuria (HOD Chemistry) and Dr. Geetanjali Rajput (HOD English) acted as judges in the event who were very fair and rational in their judgment.
