| Indo-Bangla water talks review erosion issues in common rivers | | | New Delhi: India and Bangladesh have agreed to take joint initiatives at the expert-level to check erosion along common rivers and dredge the major Teesta and Icchamati rivers.
According to the news agency, this was decided at talks between Water Resources Ministers from both sides which ended on Wednesday.
"We need some more time to resolve the outstanding problems causing miseries to people of both the countries," Bangladesh's Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed told reporters. He was joined by his Indian counterpart Saif-ud din Soz.
Ahmed expected the next Joint River Commission (JRC), to be held in New Delhi "soon", to solve all outstanding issues of common rivers.
"Nothing has been agreed and nothing has been rejected," Hafiz said referring to the outcome of the meeting that came after delegations of both countries inspected the erosion sites of common rivers in West Bengal and Tripura and in Bangladesh in the past 10 days.
Soz echoed Hafiz, saying "some technical issues are still in hand which need some more time for resolution. The problems are in sharp focus and we will not waste any time as these are human problems."
The Indian minister, however, said one of the "revolutionary" outcomes of the meeting is the decision in principle to launch a joint dredging of the Icchamati River under a tender also to be floated jointly.
Hafiz cited the consensus on joint dredging of the 20 kilometre stretches of the Teesta river as another mentionable outcome of the meeting.
