| Disaster management program for teachers | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 30- Aimed at sensitizing the teaching fraternity and school administrators of Jammu city about the measures and preventive initiatives to be taken to meet an eventuality during earthquake or any manmade or natural calamity, a Disaster Management Program was held here at Police Control Room, Jammu today. The program envisages preparing the participants to adopt earthquake risk mitigation measures for a better future to live in. Besides, disaster management information to the teachers, students and the school administrators would enthuse in them a firm determination and courage to combat all impending challenges posed by natural calamities like earthquake. The Inspector General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Dilbagh Singh, inaugurated the function which was organized by the Civil Defence and office of Divisional Commissioner, Jammu in collaboration with United Nations Development Program under Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Program-UNDP-GOI. Deputy Controller Civil Defence, Jammu Khalil -ur-Rehman, Chief Coordinator, UNDP, Dr. Ranbhushan Singh, heads of various educational institutions, teachers and Civil Defence functionaries participated in the program. Speaking on the occasion, Dilbagh said that one of the most important earthquake risk mitigation measure is sensitizing the teachers and school administrators, on whom lies great responsibility of protecting the lives of one of the most vulnerable group of the society i.e. children. Stating earthquake and fire incidents to be the most hazardous disaster threats in our teaching institutions, he said that by putting in collective efforts and timely precautionary measures we can reduce the impact of these mishaps. Referring to certain way outs for such disasters, he emphasized upon the urgency to effectively implement the Disaster Management Action Plans in schools and colleges. Highlighting the importance of Civil Defence Organization to combat disasters, Dilbagh said that, at present, 19 Civil Defence towns have been established in the State, of which, 10 are functioning in Kashmir. Efforts are being initiated for establishing such more towns to help the masses during any exigency, he added.
