| J&K seeks Central funds for augmentation of water supply | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 30- The Jammu and Kashmir Government has submitted two major drinking water projects to the union Ministry for Urban Development for funding under JNNURM. Official sources today said that one Rs.338.74 crore project, submitted to ministry, relates to the augmentation of dirking water supply in order to meet the demand in the city of Srinagar. Another Rs.535 crore scheme, submitted to the Ministry for funding, will ease the drinking water scarcity in Jammu city. Sources said that the Government had finalized a plan of covering all the 12015 habitations under the Bharat Nirman program so that people in these habitations receive potable water. So far 8626 habitations have been covered under this program. The sources said that the demand for potable water in Srinagar city has been registering further hike and the Government has added 12.25 million gallons of water a day from Rangil and Doodganga water supply schemes. The project had cost the Government Rs.70.18 crores. The work on adding 14 million gallons of water a day to Sittlee Filtration plant for increasing the drinking water supply capacity for the Jammu city is at the final stage. The scheme will cost Rs.35.26 crores. In addition to this, water supply schemes with an estimated cost of Rs.39.26 crores were in progress in 10 towns of the state under the Accelerated Urban Water Supply program and the schemes may be completed by the end of the current fiscal. The Government of India has been approached for funding water supply augmentation schemes in 35 other towns. The scheme submitted to the central Government is estimated to cost Rs.589.85 crores ==
