PDP to announce its candidates tomorrow
3/30/2009 10:40:46 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 30-The Political Affairs Committee of the PDP will finalize the names of the party candidates for three Lok Sabha constituencies from Kashmir at its meeting here tomorrow. The party leadership has already selected probable for the party mandate and the list will be deliberated at the PAC meeting.
Party sources said that the PDP leadership planned to field either Dilawar Mir, who had lost the Rafiabad seat in the recent Assembly election, or Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, who had won from the Pattan Assembly constituency for Baramulla Lok Sabha seat. Similarly from Srinagar Lok Sabha seat the party is considering to field Tariq Hameed Karra, former Finance Minister who too lost the November Assembly election.
For the PDP, the Anantnag parliamentary seat is very important because in 2004 it had elected Mehbooba Mufti. Since Mehbooba is the leader of the opposition in the Assembly she may not contest the Lok Sabha poll from Anantnag constituency. The party has been deliberating on three names, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Abdul Aziz Zargar and Abdul Rehman Veeri, two former ministers. After having won two Assembly seats in the Jammu region, the PDP leadership has decided to contest both Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Kathua Lok Sabha seats. For the Jammu-Poonch it has fielded T.S.Bajwa, a former Rajya Sabha member and for Udhampur-Kathua it may field Balbir Singh hailing from Billawar. As far as Ladakh seat is concerned it may field Kachu Ali Mohammed.
Indications are that in the three Lok Sabha constituencies in the Kashmir valley it is going to be the contest between the candidates fielded by the National Conference and those belonging to the PDP. However, in the two constituencies of the Jammu region, the PDP candidates may face the main challenge from the BJP, the Congress and the Panthers party that is contesting Udhampur-Kathua seat. The Lok Sabha election results will determine whether the NC-Congress alliance has proved a successful experiment or it has simply weakened the roots of both the mainstream political parties.
