| 8 nominated MLCs sworn in by Dy Chairman | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, MAR 30: Deputy Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council (JKLC) today administered the oath of office and secrecy to eight newly nominated members, four each from Congress and the ruling national conference, taking the strength of the House to 31. The new MLCs Ravinder Kumar Sharma, Subash Chander Gupta, Amrit Malhotra and Bashir Ahmad Magray (all Congress) and Javed Ahmed Rana, Mehboob Beg, Sheikh Ghulam Qadir Pradesi and Ajay Kumar Sadhotra (all NC) - were administered the oath of office by Deputy Chairman Arvinder Micky in his office chamber here this evening, officials said.
Governor N N Vohra had nominated eight politicians of the ruling NC and Congress---including four who had been defeated by their rivals in the recent Assembly elections--- members on the recommendations of the coalition government on March 28. Earlier, 11 members of different political parties were elected on March 7 to the 36-member House of J&K Legislative Council.
There are now 31 members in the ‘House of Elders’ and they include 11 of such politicians who had failed to get the peoples’ mandate in the Assembly elections held in November-December 2008. While NC had accommodated as many as eight of its defeated candidates in the Legislative Council, PDP and NPP have pushed one each through this door. Congress has one-odd defeated candidate in Abdul Gani Vakil but he had been already an MLC, who also functioned as Minister for Social Welfare in Ghulam Nabi Azad’s government last year. |
