KVK Reasi promotes organic turmeric, ginger cultivation

Reasi, Nov 3: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating the farmers on the organic turmeric and ginger cultivation in Reasi distt. of J&K under the dynamic stewardship of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. According to Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal crops such as vegetables, fruits, cereals etc. of some pockets of the district are badly affected by the monkeys menace. He said that organic turmeric and ginger crops have an immense potential in the distt. and these crops are not damaged by the monkeys.
He added that both of these crops are viable alternative crops in monkeys’ prone areas and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi is technically guiding the farmers on the commercial cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger so that chemicals free turmeric and ginger can be produced.
He further said that the KVK is educating the farmers on soil health amanagenr and guiding them for the preparation of organic formulations such as beejamrit, jeevamrit, cow urine, Panchgavya, vermicompost etc. KVK is also guiding the farmers on the use of mulching material such as maize straw, paddy straw, leaves, crop residues etc. which is helpful to suppress weeds and preserve moisture in the soil. He informed that organic and natural farming is helpful in the production of chemical spices by reducing the cost of cultivation.
He expressed that the farmers are regularly guided on the organic management of diseases, insect-pests and nutrients in both turmeric and ginger.
He said that both organic turmeric and ginger have numerous value addition opportunities owing to their widespread use as the spices in food and beverages and as antioxidants in medicines. are helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity of the body.
He stressed on the formulation Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs) of organic turmeric turmeric and ginger growers.
He narrated that KVK is guiding the farmers on the branding, packaging and marketing of organic turmeric and ginger.
By observing the results of successful organic ginger and turmeric growers many new farmers are coming forward to grow organic turmeric and ginger.
He said that KVK is encouraging the farmers on the value addition in turmeric and ginger as it can create some new income and employment opportunities especially among the small land holding farmers and consequently give a boost to these spices production in the area.
