Rattan Lal Gupta criticizes Smart City Project in Jammu
11/5/2024 9:57:08 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 5: Rattan Lal Gupta, Provincial President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), today expressed deep dissatisfaction with the development efforts under the Smart City project in Jammu, asserting that the work has not met the expectations of the people. He criticized the administration for its failure to deliver on key aspects that define a Smart City, leaving many of the city's issues unaddressed and residents disappointed.
Despite the grand promises of a 'Smart City,' the reality on the ground reflects a different story," the senior NC leader said in a statement issued here today.
He said "Jammu's roads are in deplorable condition, with inadequate maintenance and planning that leave citizens frustrated with daily commute issues. Streetlights along major roads remain non-functional, creating inconvenience and safety concerns, particularly at night." He added that deplorable condition of lanes and drains giving shabby look to the city.
Highlighting the lack of amenities and basic facilities, Rattan Lal Gupta noted that public parks are poorly maintained, failing to provide the recreational spaces that citizens expect in a city of Jammu's stature. "The administration's approach appears haphazard, with no cohesive design or aesthetic appeal to enhance the city's attractiveness," he added.
One of the key features that sets a Smart City apart is the provision of public amenities like Wi-Fi connectivity, he pointed out the absence of such facilities. Additionally, the much-anticipated gondola project, intended to boost tourism and local transport options, remains non-functional, underscoring a lack of follow-through on ambitious initiatives.
He also resented the hanging sub standard electricity wires and low-lying power transformers scattered across Jammu, pointing out the hazards they pose to residents. He emphasized that such unsafe and outdated infrastructure is unacceptable in a city striving for Smart City status.
The Provincial President further questioned the administration's adherence to the established norms of a Smart City. "It is evident that the authorities are working without a clear vision, resulting in disjointed projects that neither serve the people nor uplift the city's image," he stated.
In a strongly worded appeal, Rattan Lal Gupta urged the present Govt. to acknowledge the significant gaps in the Smart City plan and to take immediate, concrete steps toward rectification. He called for a comprehensive review and redesign of the current framework to ensure that the development truly meets the needs of Jammu's residents. "The people of Jammu deserve a city that matches their aspirations - safe, well-maintained, and modern in every sense. The administration must listen to the people's voices and deliver on the promises it made," he asserted.
Rattan Lal asserted that the National Conference under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah remains committed to advocate for the rightful development of Jammu and will ensure that every step taken benefits the citizens and enhances the Jammu city's growth and livability.
