| Natrang Theatre Festival concludes with Balwant Thakur’s ‘Aaj Ki Aurat’ | | |
Early Times report jammu , March 31
Balwant Thakur’s powerful statement on the fate of women today in India- “Aaj Ki Aurat”- a musical play in Hindi staged here today at Natrang Studio Theatre on the concluding day of Natrang Theatre Festival. Natrang has organized a Six day Theatre Festival to commorate World Theatre Day celebrations.
“Aaj Ki Aurat” a highly socially relevant play highlights the plight of the ordinary woman even though the World extols the success stories of Kalpana Chawala, Sunita Williams and the presence of the first female President, women Chief ministers, executives, policewomen, engineers, pilots, and scientists. The play is woven around a number of women who represent a country girl, a housewife, an illiterate woman and an educated girl. It throws light upon the various problems faced by fair sex and the crimes against them.
On one hand when we boast of having provided equality for women as a safeguard in our constitution, this country still could not muster courage to elect more than five percent women to the highest decision making body-Parliament of India. In a highly experimental manner through the form of theatre of clowns, various stages of women’s life have been showcased. Still in most of the families the news of the birth of a baby girl upsets many. Afterwards she has to face discrimination at every stage of life be it the early school life, later adolescence, adulthood and the post marriage life.
When she aspires to do something in life and wishes to establish her own identity and place in the world, she is not encouraged and on the contrary such hostile atmosphere is created around her that she withdraws on her own. Though lot of examples of male dominance are cited every where but interestingly women have not been able to understand that in most of the cases they get exploited by their own fraternity. The play also hits at media particularly the TV channels for wrong projection of the Indian women. Younger generations instead of taking inspiration from the great deeds Indian women like Rani Jhansi, Chand Bibi and Laxmi Bai, seems to have the film actresses, and fashion celebrities as their role models.
The presentation was dominated by four actresses who portrayed various characters in the play. They included Manali Sharma, Tajasvi Sharma, Divya Kohli and Surbhi Sharma. All four have been able to present good histrionics while creating different situations and sequences in the play. They were supported by two male performers viz. Rohit Verma and Hemant Bholla who ably underlined the punches in the production. The Lights were designed by Gaurav Jamwal and executed by Mohd. Yaseen. Mohit Sharma coordinated the show and Rahul Singh did the presentations.
