Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 8: In a significant step towards enhancing urban policing strategies, the Jammu and Kashmir Police organized a One-Day Conference on "Urban Policing" at the Conference Hall, DPL Jammu. The event, held in compliance with directives from the DGP's/IGP's Conference, aimed to discuss and develop smarter strategies for managing urban security challenges.
The conference was attended by senior police officials including DIG JSK Range Sh. Shiv Kumar Sharma-IPS, SSP Jammu Sh. Joginder Singh-JKPS, SSP Traffic City Sh. Faisal Qureshi-JKPS, and several other officers from Jammu District. Also present were prominent citizens, representatives from the Chamber of Commerce Jammu, media, academicians, law students from Jammu University, and civil administration officers including ADC L&O Jammu, Secretary JDA, and others.
In his opening address, DIG JSK Range emphasized the need for smarter policing in urban spaces, noting that Jammu Police is pioneering such conferences in the region. He underscored the importance of integrating technology such as CCTV networks and Command Control Centers to effectively control crime and ensure public safety.
The conference featured a series of discussions and informative speeches by key speakers including SDPO Gandhinagar Kartik Shrotriya-IPS, Rtd. Sessions Judge Sh. Subash Gupta, President of Chamber of Commerce Sh. Arun Gupta, and Professor Navdeep Kaur from Jammu University. They discussed the various challenges of urban policing, including the management of land and sand mafias, floating populations, traffic issues, and terrorism. The speakers also highlighted the need for modern police infrastructure and specialized urban police models for better crime prevention.
Key recommendations from the conference included:
Installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations such as bus stands, vital road links, railway stations, and border roads.
Adoption of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) to reduce human intervention and improve traffic flow.
Establishing modern police stations with the latest equipment and weaponry.
Creating a separate urban police model tailored to the unique needs of urban areas.
Assigning traffic accident investigations to specialized traffic police stations.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from SSP Jammu Sh. Joginder Singh, who emphasized the importance of proactive measures to address the evolving nature of urban crime. He noted that criminals often stay ahead of law enforcement, stressing the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in policing strategies.
The conference marks a significant step towards creating a safer and smarter urban environment, particularly in Jammu City, with a focus on collaborative efforts between law enforcement, policymakers, and the public. Following the conclusion of the conference, SSP Jammu also presented a detailed session on "Managing Border Security and Cross-Border Crimes," attended by senior officers and officials of Jammu District.
