Highest 17 lakh voters for Jammu LS seat
2,210 polling stations for voting on April 16

Jammu Mar31- Jammu Parliamentary constituency, which is going to polls on April 16, has a total electorate of 17, 21, 696, which is the highest for any Parliamentary constituency. The total voters also include 23,674 service electors. Of these 8, 89, 562 are male and 8, 32,134 female voters for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In comparison, there were 18, 49, 989 voters for the 2004 elections.
Madan Lal Sharma of INC won the Parliamentary seat in 2004 elections when he defeated his nearest rival Dr. Nirmal Singh of BJP by a margin of 17,568 votes.While Madan Lal Sharma polled 3,19,994 votes, Dr. Nirmal Singh polled 3,02,426 votes. The total poll percentage was recorded at 44.49.
The Assembly segments going to polls in Jammu Parliamentary elections in 2009 are Samba and Vijaypur in Samba district, Nagrota, Gandhinagar, Jammu East, Jammu West, Bishnah, R. S. Pura, Suchetgarh, Marh, Raipur-Domana, Akhnoor and Chhamb in Jammu district, Nowshera, Darhal, Rajouri and Kalakote in Rajouiri district and Surankote, Mendhar and Poonch-Haveli in Poonch district.
Jammu district leads with 9, 31, 836 voters which include 4, 81, 123 male and 4, 50, 713 female voters. Rajouiri district follows with 3, 56, 270 electors including 1, 85, 052 male and 1, 71, 218 female electors. Poonch district has 2, 59,103 total registered voters which includes 1, 32, 987 male and 1, 26,116 female voters while Samba district has 1, 74, 487 voters including 90,400 male and 84,087 female voters.
As many as 2,210 polling stations spread across 20 segments of Jammu Lok Sabha seat will be set up to facilitate voters. These include 1,931 main and 279 auxiliary polling stations. Jammu district again leads with 1,153 polling stations.
The poll schedule for Jammu Parliamentary seat has already been set into motion by issuance of notification on March 23. The last day of filing nomination was March 30 while as scrutiny of papers took place on March 31. The last day for withdrawal of candidatures is April 2 while as polling in the constituency will be held on April 16.
In 1967 elections and 1971 midterm polls, Jammu constituency was represented by Congress candidate Inderjit Malhotra while as in 1977, the seat was won by independent candidate Mr. Baldev Singh. In the midterm 1980 Lok Sabha elections, the seat was won by Girdhari Lal Dogra of INC (I). In 1984 and 1989 General Elections, Jammu seat was won by Janak Raj Gupta of INC while as in 1996 the seat was won by Mangat Ram Sharma of INC. In 1998 Vaid Vishnu Dutt of BJP won the seat
