| PROTESTS AGAINST POPE'S REMARKS CONTINUE IN KASHMIR | | | Srinagar, Sept 22,: With anger against remarks made by Pope Benedict XVI during his recent speech in Vatican about Islam and Muslims failing to die down, peaceful protests continued here on Friday as priests in all the major Masjids (mosques) of Kashmir Valley condemned these remarks. Imam of historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, Moulana Ahmad Syed Naqshbandi in his Friday sermon strongly condemned the remarks made by Pope. "We the Muslims ought to condemn unwarranted and uncalled for remarks of Pope collectively," he said while urging people to register peaceful protests. Reports pouring in from all district headquarters like Kupwara, Baramullah, Budgam, Anantnag and Pulwama here said that Imams (priests) of all the major and local mosques there deplored Pope's remarks and asked Muslim community to exercise restraint during the protests. Imams urged upon Muslim community to register their protests through peaceful means to propagate the message that Islam teaches Muslims to be tolerant. Chairman of Valley Citizen's Council Zareef Ahmad Zareef also in his press statement voiced concern over the remarks of Pope. "This is highly unfortunate that the West is on a perpetual mission against Islam and Muslims. Be it the publication of caricatures and cartoons by Danish newspaper or recent remarks made by Pope, this is only to hurt religious sentiments of Muslims. We condemn such acts," he told KIP. In a separate incident, dozens of activists of Jammu and Kashmir Republican Movement, a constituent of Mirwaiz Hurriyat, led by Abdul Manan Bukhari today staged a protest demonstrations. |
