| GDC Thannamandi celebrates International Day for tolerance | | |

THANNAMANDI, Nov 16: The Department of Botany in collaboration with the Literary Committee and Department of Islamic Studies of Government Degree College Thannamandi celebrated International Day for Tolerance as part of Viksit Bharat Abhiyan @2047 here today.
On this occasion a simple but impressive programme on the theme 'Promoting Respect and Understanding Worldwide' organized under the guidance of Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Vice Principal of the College in which Dr. Ashaq Malik, Coordinator, IQAC was resource person. Dr. Abdul Haque Naimi, Convener, Literary Committee and Dr. Nazar Ul Islam coordinated the event.
In his comprehensive talk, Dr. Ashaq Malik gave an historical account of the establishment of this day on the 50th anniversary of UNESCO in 1995 under UN resolution 51/95. He explained how the United Nations came up with this idea in order to emphasize the value of tolerance as a fundamental principle for building peaceful and inclusive societies. This day was declared to encourage global dialogue and cooperation to counter intolerance, discrimination and violence. This declaration comprising 6 articles emphasized that tolerance is not just a moral duty but a legal and political binding for peace and social harmony, he added.
Dr. Nazakat underlined the need for tolerance at every level for a more peaceful and inclusive society. Students and youth can be agents for positive change to combat negativity, discrimination and violation of human rights by adopting principles of tolerance, equity and nonviolence, he said.
