Cong mulls removing “deadwood” to revive party after historic debacle
11/20/2024 10:12:15 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 20: After facing its worst-ever electoral debacle in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, the Congress leadership is reportedly contemplating bold measures to rejuvenate the party, including removing non-performing senior leaders.
In a recent meeting of the party’s block presidents, the majority of speakers voiced their discontent, directly blaming senior leaders for the party's humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The meeting, described as both tense and introspective, saw grassroots leaders openly criticize the inertia at the top. They argued that the lack of connection with voters, outdated strategies, and the failure of senior leaders to energize the cadre were key reasons for the party’s dismal performance.
Sources said that in the block presidents’ meeting, over 80 percent of them spoke openly against senior leaders and cautioned that without removing these leaders revival of the party was not possible.
“We cannot keep carrying the burden of leaders who have become liabilities rather than assets. The party needs fresh blood and a forward-looking strateg

,” said a block president from Jammu reflecting the mood of the gathering.
Sources close to the party leadership hinted that a high-level restructuring is on the cards. A senior Congress leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The leadership has taken the feedback seriously. There is a growing realization that merely relying on legacy and status quo won’t work anymore. Tough decisions will have to be made.”
Party insiders have also pointed to the need for greater involvement of younger leaders who have a better understanding of the ground realities. The call for change is expected to feature prominently in the upcoming meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, where sweeping reforms might be announced.
The Congress party, which once dominated Jammu’s politics, has seen a steady decline in recent years, culminating in the current crisis. With this latest debacle, calls for accountability and change have reached fever pitch.
Whether the leadership will muster the courage to take decisive steps remains to be seen, but the rank and file of the party are clear: revival demands action, not rhetoric.
