| Centre for tight security of 25 VVIPs, including Omar | | | New Delhi | Apr 01, The Centre has written to the Chief Ministers of all the states to ensure tight security for nearly two dozen VVIPs, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul and Priyanka, during the election campaign.
Accordintg to official sources, the letter written by Union home minister P Chidambaram, has listed out the 'Dos and Don'ts' to be ensured by the state police and paramilitary forces during their electioneering.
The home minister's missive comes in the wake of intelligence reports suggesting that terrorists may attack key leaders in the run up to the polls.
In his letter, Chidambaram has asked all the states to maintain tight vigil at the venues of all political rallies addressed by or having VVIP presence.
State governments have been asked to convince the local leaders of the political parties about the security drills and arrangements to be put in place during the campaign, official sources said.
State police have been advised to seek cooperation of local leaders, by adhering to strict guidelines listed out for the security of visiting VVIPs, to thwart any untoward incident during the election campaign, they said.
Besides, reining in the supporters and local leaders who throng the dais and venue of the rally, state police and paramilitary forces have been asked to follow rigid security drills before the arrival of these VVIPs.
The security steps include securing neighbouring high-rise buildings and manual frisking of people who are supposed to be near the leaders. Total sanitisation of all areas where top leaders will attend rallies must be carried out in letter and spirit, sources said.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, her children Rahul and Priyanka and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have got the cover of elite Special Protection Group (SPG).
Besides them, the list includes BJP leader LK Advani, former chief ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad, Farooq Abdullah and J Jayalalithaa.
Chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh --- Omar Abdullah, Narendra Modi and Mayawati respectively --- also figure in the list prepared by the Home Ministry.
