| Astrology Department in JU ‘still a dream’ for scholars | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 02- Though the Astrology is becoming a subject of interest among the student community of Jammu and Kashmir but unfortunately no such department has so far been established in University of Jammu despite having got go-ahead signal by the University grants commission (UGC). Reliable sources in JU told that a proposal for the establishment of Astrology department was moved by the Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu in 1999 and the same was accepted by the UGC. “A grant Rs 15 lakhs in addition with some teaching posts were allowed but even then it could not be approved in the university council meeting, for almost two times” sources added. Sanskrit scholars of the varsity who dreamed to be the Astrologists of tomorrow allege that they will have to peruse for further studies out side the state. “I have made up my mind to go to Hyderabad for further studies with specialization in Astrology”, one of the scholar said. The Department of Sanskrit Prof Kidar Nath said that the state government was not sincere in establishing the Astrology department in University of Jammu for the obvious reasons. “We made every effort, but I think state government is not interested”, said Prof Nath. Jammu and Kashmir Sanskrit Perished (JKSP) president Paras Ram Shastri when contacted said that they too have been demanding for introducing a diploma in Sanskrit so that those interested in learning ancient language could be provided basic education and it could be promoted. Referring to their long pending demand of Astrology department, Shastri maintained that they have again submitted a memorandum to the UGC team during their recent visit to the varsity seeking establishment of the said department. He said number of memorandums was given to the varsity and government but till date no step was taken. He, whoever, said his organization would fight for the establishment of the said department. He said that efforts were made by the former VCs Prof Sharma and Prof Matoo but nothing concrete came out of the proposals they put forth before Council of the University which is the authority to approve any proposal.
