NC’s growing influence forces Cong to launch mass contact programme in Jammu region

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 26: In a bid to reclaim its political stronghold in the Jammu region, Congress has initiated an ambitious mass contact programme. The move comes as the ruling National Conference (NC) intensifies its efforts to expand its footprint in Jammu province, traditionally considered a bastion of Congress. The Congress leadership aims to reconnect with voters and reestablish its relevance in the face of NC’s rising popularity.
As part of its mass contact programme, the Congress on Tuesday organized a rally at Rajouri town which was addressed by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Tariq Hameed Karra.
Rajouri is the only Assembly segment in Jammu province which was won by the Congress in the just concluded Assembly elections.
The urgency for Congress stems from its lackluster performance in the last assembly elections. Of the 43 assembly segments in Jammu province, Congress managed to secure just one seat, a stark contrast to NC’s impressive tally of seven seats. This shift underscores the challenges Congress faces in retaining its voter base in a region once synonymous with the party's influence.
The Congress mass contact program, launched with much fanfare, and it will involve a series of rallies, grassroots meetings, and door-to-door campaigns across Jammu. Senior party leaders, including former ministers and key organizational figures, have been deployed to mobilize support and address pressing local issues such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and concerns over d

velopmental imbalances.
Speaking at a rally at Rajouri, senior Congress leaders highlighted the significance of the program, stating, “This initiative is about reconnecting with our people. Congress has always stood for Jammu’s unique identity and aspirations. We are here to listen, to act, and to rebuild our bond with the voters.”
Party strategists believe that addressing regional grievances and emphasizing Congress’s historical role in championing Jammu’s interests will resonate with the electorate.
Meanwhile, the National Conference continues to solidify its presence in Jammu, leveraging its performance in the last assembly elections. Traditionally associated with the Kashmir Valley, the NC has steadily made inroads in Jammu through targeted outreach programs and strategic alliances with local leaders.
Political analysts attribute NC’s gains to its focus on developmental promises and its ability to present itself as a pan-Jammu and Kashmir party. The party’s leadership has projected a narrative of inclusive governance, appealing to diverse communities in the region.
A senior NC leader recently remarked, “The people of Jammu have placed their faith in us because we have delivered on our commitments. Our focus remains on equitable development and safeguarding the rights of all.”
Congress’s mass contact program is widely seen as a litmus test for its ability to reclaim lost ground. However, the party faces stiff competition not only from BJP but also from NC vying for influence in Jammu’s political landscape.
