GMC, SOTTO J&K Felicitate BJS for Contributions to Corneal Donation

JAMMU, Nov 27: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, in collaboration with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K, felicitated Bhartiya Jain Sanghatna (BJS) J&K Chapter for their significant contribution to corneal donation in Jammu & Kashmir. The ceremony was held at GMC Jammu, where BJS J&K was recognized for their role in promoting deceased organ and tissue donation within the community.
Dr. Elias Sharma, Professor and Head of Urology and Nodal Officer for SOTTO J&K, began the program by sharing that GMC Jammu had successfully conducted 26 live kidney transplants since its registration in April 2022. Dr. Ashok Sharma, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at GMC Jammu, highlighted that 45 corneal transplants had been performed at the institution, sharing his experience on corneal donation and transplant processes.
Dr. Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director of SOTTO J&K, expressed gratitude to BJS J&K for their active involvement, noting that 17 Jain families had donated corneas in the years 2023 and 2024. This accounted for 34 out of 52 total corneal donations in J&K during this period.
Mr. Sandeep Jain, President of BJS J&K, shared that many of the community's members had pledged to donate organs and tissues, emphasizing the importance of timely cornea retrieval by the Eye Bank GMC Jammu.
Mrs. Monika Jain, Secretary of BJS J&K, urged the community to overcome misconceptions and adopt a positive approach towards organ and tissue donation, which could save many lives.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, stressed the importance of awareness regarding organ donation, urging that it should become a regular practice. As part of the felicitation, a memento and an organ donation painting were presented to Mr. Sandeep Jain by Dr. Ashutosh Gupta.
A video message on Human Organ Donation, composed and presented by Mr. Narinder Vaid, Jr. Staff Nurse/Transplant Coordinator at GMC Jammu, was also released during the event. The video production involved the talents of Ms. Neeru Verma (Co-actor), Waziirr X (Music and Video Director), Gursharan Garry (Actor), and Ashok Jasrota (Director of Photography).
The event was attended by various medical professionals, including Prof. Dr. Sanjay Kai, Dr. Hansraj, Dr. Rehana Khurshid, and Dr. Sanyogita Soodan, along with members of BJS J&K.
The program was coordinated by Mrs. Anshu Sharma (Consultant, IEC/Media), along with other key staff members from SOTTO J&K.
