Jammu-Poonch NH project to be completed by 2027

Jammu, Nov 29: The development of the Jammu-Poonch National Highway (NH-144A), a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, is progressing steadily under the supervision of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRT&H).
Sharing details about the project, Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth informed the Lok Sabha that the ambitious project, which spans two major sections, is expected to be completed in phases by 2027.
The 168-km Akhnoor-Poonch section is being upgraded to a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, including the construction of four tunnels totaling 4.85 km in length. Executed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in eight construction packages, the project has so far achieved the completion of 83 km. The remaining work is on track for phased completion between 2025 and 2027.
Meanwhile, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is overseeing the development of the 30-km Jammu-Akhnoor stretch, divided into four packages. Work on 5.2 km has already been completed, and the remaining construction is targeted for completion by March 2026.

oth BRO and NHIDCL are committed to maintaining the highway in traffic-worthy condition to ensure safe and uninterrupted movement for commuters, benefiting residents of Rajouri and Poonch districts”, the Minister said.
The Minister said that to prevent delays, BRO has implemented regular follow-ups and maintained close coordination with various departments and authorities in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir. MoRT&H is actively monitoring issues like land acquisition, utility shifting, encroachments, law and order concerns, and contractual matters.
Regular meetings with UT officials at local, district, and state levels are being held to address critical challenges promptly.
Once completed, the Jammu-Poonch National Highway will significantly reduce travel time, enhance trade and tourism opportunities, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. The highway is expected to be a transformative project, solidifying the region's strategic and economic potential.
The government remains committed to delivering this vital project within the stipulated timelines, ensuring that the region reaps the benefits of enhanced infrastructure and connectivity.
