Jammu, Dec 14: The ruling National Conference joined other constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) in challenging the hegemony of the Congress in leading the opposition at the national level.
In an interview with a news agency, Omar Abdullah called on the Congress party to justify its leadership within the INDIA bloc, amid rising dissatisfaction among partner parties.
Abdullah emphasized that leadership must be earned and urged Congress to champion the restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed concerns over the alliance's sporadic engagement, warning that lack of consistent communication may jeopardize its efficacy.
Highlighting the Congress's recent electoral failures, Abdullah advised a critical evaluation of its strategies to address alliance tensions. He noted that Congress's participation in J-K governance hinges on the restoration of statehood.

Congress' "dominance" in the opposition alliance.
Differences have emerged in the INDIA block from Maharashtra, where the Samajwadi Party (SP) has announced to quit the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the state after the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader praised the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
Several prominent opposition leaders, including RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, Samajwadi Party leader Udaiveer Singh, and YSRCP Rajya Sabha MP Vijayasai Reddy, have voiced support for Mamts Banerjee as head of the INDIA bloc in place of Congress.
Lalu Yadav said, “We will support Mamata Banerjee. She should be allowed to head the INDIA bloc.” His son, Tejashwi Yadav, added that the decision must be made through consensus.
YSRCP MP Vijayasai Reddy praised Banerjee’s political acumen and track record, tweeting, “Mamata Banerjee is an ideal candidate to lead the INDIA alliance as she has the required political and electoral experience to head an alliance.”
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Udaiveer Singh also extended “100% support and cooperation,” noting, “If Mamata Banerjee has expressed any desire, the leaders of the INDIA bloc should consider it. This will strengthen the alliance.”
Meanwhile, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee called on Congress to put aside its ego and allow Mamata Banerjee to lead.
“Congress needs to understand that under its leadership, the INDIA bloc has struggled. If Mamata Banerjee becomes the leader, it will be much better,” he remarked.
