| SMC Corporators meet Sinha | | Beautify Srinagar as showcase of Kashmir: Governor | | SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 22- Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today underlined the role of civic bodies in beautifying and up keeping urban areas, hoping that despite resource constrains this important activity will receive due attention of corporators and councilors. Addressing the corporators of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, who called on him at Raj Bhavan this morning, the Governor said that corporators have immense responsibility towards the development of areas they represent and the society too had to accord due status to their elected representatives. Responding to the points raised by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and several corporators, General Sinha said that he will advice the State Government to look into their problems including grant of due status and implementation of the terms with respect to their salaries and honorarium which have been agreed to by the Government in August this year, as per the corporators. He said all other points projected during the interaction will also be brought to the notice of the Government. The Governor urged the corporators to take every possible step in beautifying Srinagar that is the capital of Paradise on Earth. This city has to be the showcase of Kashmir’s beauty to the world, he said while giving the historical background of Srinagar founded by Ashoka the Great. He also dwelt on the great role played by Mughal King, Jehangir in laying mesmerizing and magnificent gardens around the city. Mayor, Mr Ghulam Mustafa Bhat enumerated the programmes undertaken by Srinagar Municipal Corporation for upgrading civic facilities, saying that Rs 3.50 crores had been earmarked for the purpose last year. Of these, Rs 5 lakh each were spent in the 68 wards with the involvement of respective corporators. During the period 439 civic works were completed. Deputy Mayor Mr Salman Sagar hoped that the Governor will use his good offices in getting the grievances of the corporators redressed and strengthening the financial health of SMC so that it can satiate urges and aspirations of the city dwellers. The points that were raised during the interaction related to special funding to the corporation, massive development of the city, relief to flood hit people and macademisation of civil lines in Srinagar. The corporators including several lady corporators also projected the problems of the Srinagar city before the Governor. Later, they joined at get together with the Governor in sprawling and magnificent Raj Bhavan lawns in the lap of Zabarwan Hills.
