Omar plans to draw UK link to transform Kashmir
British trainers to teach JKP how to tackle stone-pelting

LONDON : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah plans to draw on his British links to transform the image of the State and reinvent it as a beautiful tourist destination.
While urging the international community to support democracy in Pakistan and Washington to facilitate peace between Islamabad and New Delhi, Abdullah, the youngest Chief Minister in the country, sees his role in "keeping things on an even keel."
By regenerating the region, Abdullah wants to create the political and economic conditions needed to eradicate terrorism and move towards peace deal between India and Pakistan.
Born in England to a British mother, Abdullah spent his first five years in Essex. He has been frequently visiting his mother Mollie and three sisters in the UK.
Although only 100 days in office as Chief Minister, 39-year-old Abdullah has a clear vision, ‘The Sunday Times’ observed.
Expressing his determination to clean up the Dal Lake in the State, Abdullah said: "If you look at the management of the Lake District (in the UK), that’s something we would love to be able to replicate (in Dal Lake). Or if you look at the way the UK promoted the Peak District, we could use that for our mountain regions".
On security, he is drawing on his British links to improve the State Government’s approach towards crowd control.
British police trainers are soon expected to offer courses in the region on unarmed crowd management, the report said.
Abdullah, who has already survived three assassination attempts, wants his legacy to be the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir’s blood-soaked image.
"For the past 20 years the only stories that have come out of Jammu and Kashmir have been bad ones.
If you can change the perception that the majority of the people have about Jammu and Kashmir, that it can be known for more than just bloodshed and violence, I’ll be more than satisfied," he said.
