| MAINSTREAM CAMP COMMEMORATES MARTYRS AMIDST STRIKE IN VALLEY | | | SRINAGAR July13 : On Thursday it was turn of mainstream politicians to pay floral tributes to 13 July, 1931 martyrs–who sacrificed their lives fighting tyrannical Dogra rule, at martyrs' graveyard in the holy Naqshband Saheb shrine located in downtown area of Srinagar.
Amid a general strike called by separatists Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah led their parties in paying homage to 22 martyrs who were fired upon by Dogra police outside Central jail Srinagar on July 13, 1931.
Chief Minister Azad laid flower wreaths on graves of martyrs and offered religious prayers (fateha). Azad also inspected guard of honour at the Mazar presented by Jammu and Kashmir Police there at the graveyard.
Opposition National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah, accompanied by his party leaders with the likes of Ali Mohammad Sagar and Abdul Raheem Rather, today morning also paid glowing tributes to martyrs.
Only yesterday, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference had done the same. In a veiled reference to National Conference, Mirwaiz Umar had alleged that the mainstream group "exploits sentiments of Kashmiris" and by celebrating the martyrs' day "humiliates the grand sacrifices given for the liberation of Kashmir from alien rule". Around 500 metre stretch near the graveyard there were buntings- green and red, and banners of both Mirwaiz Umar's Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Omar Abdullah's National Conference (NC) parties respectively. Reminding 'Shera-Bakra' (Lions-NC, Goats-AAC) rivalry, the displayed banners were a sign return of political rivalry of good old days between the arch-rivals.
Former Chief Minister and PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed also visited the grave yard and floral tributes to the martyrs. Mr Sayeed said the sacrifice of the people yielded results in the shape of formation of democratic government in 1947. But unfortunately, the state witnessed unprecedented ups and downs including violence during the turmoil years. He appealed people to extend fullest cooperation in achieving the long lasting and dignified peace in the state. He hoped that the dialogue for peace process between two neighbouring countries, India and Pakistan would reach logical conclusion so that the much suffered people of Jammu and Kashmir would again march on the path of peace, prosperity and development in accordance to their aspirations and urges.
Opposition National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah, after laying wreath said that government had asked him to keep a low profile today in view of disturbed security situation. He said that martyrs of 1931 had laid strong foundation for a democratic and just system. |
