Over 1.5 lac electors for Ladakh Lok Sabha seat
Polling on May 13 in Kargil, Leh districts

JAMMU, APRIL 06 – Ladakh Parliamentary constituency, set to go to polls on May 13, has a total electorate of 1,52,391 which includes 3,924 service electors. Out of the total registered voters, 77,899 are male and 74,492 female who will exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha Elections 2009.
In comparison, there were 1,75,768 electors registered for the 2004 Parliamentary elections. Mr. Thupstan Chhewang, independent candidate, won the Parliamentary seat in 2004 elections when he defeated his nearest rival Mr. Hassan Khan of NC by a margin of 25,713 votes. While Mr. Chhewang polled 66,839 votes, Mr. Khan polled 41,126 votes. The total poll percentage was recorded at 73.52.
The Assembly segments going to polls in Ladakh Parliamentary elections in 2009 are Nobra and Leh in Leh district and Kargil and Zanskar in Kargil district.
Kargil district leads with 77,514 voters which include 38,892 male and 38,622 female voters. Leh district follows with 74,877 electors including 39,007 male and 35,870 female electors.
As many as 476 polling stations, spread across four segments of Ladakh Lok Sabha seat, will be set up for the voters.
According to poll schedule for Ladakh Lok Sabha seat, notification will be issued on April 17. The last day of filing nomination is April 24 while as scrutiny of papers will take place the next day. The last day for withdrawal of candidatures is April 27 while as polling in the constituency will be held on May 13.
In 1967 and 1971 midterm polls, the Ladakh Parliamentary seat was represented by Mr. Kaushuk Bakula of the Congress. In 1977 elections, the seat was won by Ms. Parvati Devi of INC while as in the midterm 1980 Parliamentary elections, the seat was won by Mr. P. Namgyal, independent. In 1984, 1989 and 1996 elections, the seat was continuously won by Mr. P. Namgyal on INC ticket. In 1998, the seat was won by Syed Hussain of NC while as in 1999, the constituency was represented by Mr. Hassan Khan of NC.
