| Security establishment worried as LoC intrusion surges | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 6: Both the central agencies and the state Government are worried over the sudden rise in the level of infiltration at a time when several border routes in north Kashmir were still snow bound. Official sources said that though the security forces, especially the troops eliminated more than 24 militants during the last three weeks,18 in a fierce gun battle in Kupwara forests, over 50 militants are believed to have sneaked into the state from across Gurez,Kupwara,Keran,Poonch and Rajouri. The sources said that groups of people informed the security agencies that groups of militants, who had infiltrated into the state in recent weeks, had been spotted moving freely in Mendhar,Surankot,Gurez and Lolab sectors. In certain case some militants approached border villagers for food. The villagers obliged them but forced them to quit their houses immediately. According to these sources, during the last 10 days more than eight infiltration bids were foiled. It is not yet known whether some among the militants who had been forced to feedback to Pakistan managed to cross into Jammu and Kashmir. The sources said that the infiltration level from across the LOC would start rising from middle of April onwards but this time it started from the first week of March indicating that agencies across the border were determined to destabilize the security scenario during the elections. Police sources said that the entire valley besides pockets in Poonch,Rajouri,Udhampur and Doda districts had been identified as sensitive belts. They said that polling booths in these areas were being brought under heavy security cover. In addition to this each of these sensitive areas would have several police nakas for checking the movement of people. They said a day before polling night patrolling will be ordered in these sensitive areas to prevent militants from carrying out any grenade or IED explosions for creating scare among the people which was required for ensuring poor polling percentage
