| Bye-elections in Sonawar Assembly constituency on May 7 | | Over 69,000 voters to exercise franchise | | Early Times Report JAMMU, APRIL 08 – Sonawar Assembly constituency, set to go to Bye-polls on May 7 along with Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, has a total number is 69,436. Of these, 36,265 are male and 33,171 are female voters. The total number of polling stations in the constituency is 89, which is the same as in 2008 elections. The total number of voters in 2008 elections were 67,796.
Sonawar constituency was won by Dr. Farooq Abdullah of NC when he defeated his nearest rival Sheikh Ghulam Qadir Pardesi of PDP by a margin of 94 votes. Dr. Abdullah polled 7,018 votes while Mr. Pardesi polled 6,924 votes. The total votes polled were 26,852 and the poll percentage was recorded at 39.61.
However, Dr. Abdullah resigned from the constituency after being elected to the Rajya Sabha forcing a bye-election.
The constituency was carved out on 27th April, 1995 and Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Bhawan of NC was elected from this constituency in 1996 on NC ticket. In 2002, Mohammad Yaseen Shah of NC won this seat.
