Authorities rule out flood threat
Water level rises in all the major rivers

Srinagar: As the valley was lashed by heavy rains for the third consecutive day, state authorities on Wednesday ruled out flood threat urging people not to panic with the seasonal rains.
Reports reaching said that the people living in the flood prone areas of Srinagar city and other districts of the valley have expressed serious concern over the rise in the water level due to the heavy rains from the past three days.
Officials of the flood control told that they were receiving numerous phone calls from residents of many low-lying residential areas of city like Bemina, Rajbagh, Mehjoor Nagar and Hyderpora asking for assistance as waters had inundated many roads and streets in the areas.
They said there were no reports of any breach but the water level of Jhelum and its tributaries were rising and submerging areas like Bemina, Mehjoor Nagar and other areas of city.
Official sources told that the water level of Jhelum at Sangam in Islamabad district of South Kashmir district was below 17 feet the danger mark at 10.10 ft at 3pm in the afternoon.
At Ram Munshi Bagh, he said the level was recorded at 8.30 feet, while the water level at Asham in North Kashmir’s Baramulla was recorded at 7 feet half short of the danger mark.
Reports also said a number of bridges were washed away by swelling rivers and streams in many areas of North and South Kashmir. In Uri, one residential house and two shops were damaged due to the incessant rains. The district administration evacuated scores of families from low-lying areas in Shumriyal area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district after water from local streams and rivers entered the villages. Reports of evacuation were also received from Nagri, Hatmullah and Brambri areas of Kupwara district.
“We are assessing the situation on hourly basis and reporting the same to the division administration. At present there is no alarming situation arising out of the rains,” Executive Engineer, Irrigation and flood control department, Om Prakash Samnotra told .
"People should not create panic," he added.
