| Gulmarg records 1.5 feet of snow, | | Kashmir under grip of cold | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR: About one and half feet of fresh snowfall was recorded at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg while the entire Kashmir valley is under the grip of severe cold following fresh snowfall on upper reaches and heavy rains in plains, disrupting normal life. Majority roads in the summer capital, Srinagar, were inundated due to faulty drainage system despite spending crores of rupees. Traffic on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg road was suspended for several hours today following one and half feet of fresh snowfall. However, the road was reopened after the authorities pressed into service the sophisticated machines to clear accumulated snow. A hotel manager said over phone from Gulmarg that it was snowing since last evening, much to the delight of tourists and skiers, who had come from different parts of the country. However, this time hardly any foreign visitor could be seen on the slopes. He said heavy snowfall was recorded at Affarat, Kongdori and Khilangmarg. Kupwara town in north Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall for about half an hour this afternoon from 1330 hrs to 1400 hrs. Earlier, the entire town and its adjoining areas had heavy rains, resulting in considerable cold. A weather office spokesman told UNI that 28.6 mm rainfall was recorded at Kupwara. However, upper reaches in the entire north Kashmir, including Keran, Karnah, Machil, Tangdhar, Neeru and other villages near the Line of Control (LoC) experienced moderate to heavy snowfall since last evening. These areas remained cut off from the rest of the state since December last year due to heavy snowfall. The holy Amarnath cave and its periphery also experienced fresh snowfall. Reports of snowfall were also received from Chandanwari, the last motorable point on the Pahalgam-Amarnath cave route. Moderate to heavy snowfall was also experienced at Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Panjtherni and Pisso top. Srinagar and its adjoining areas were lashed by heavy rains since last night, inundating several areas. Majority roads, already damaged with big holes everywhere, were flooded with rain water due to faulty drainage system. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, was the coldest in Ladakh region where the minimum was minus one followed by Leh where the temperature was zero degree Celsius this morning. However, it was near normal at Kargil where the minimum was two degrees. Pahalgam, Amarnath base camp was coldest in the Kashmir Valley with mercury dipping to minus 3.2 degrees this morning followed by Kupwara 4.7 degrees and Kokernag 5.8 degrees.
