Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 8: Describing the National Conference-Congress alliance as unholy power hungry arrangement, the Peoples Democratic Party patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today held both parties responsible for fuelling militancy in Jammu and Kashmir allegedly by rigging elections in 1987.
Observing that the National Conference failed to fulfill its promises made during the recently held assembly elections, Mufti the opportunist coalition in the State has so far failed to come up to the expectations of the common masses.
“Enjoying power is the only reason for the formation un programmatic opportunist alliance between National Conference and Congress”, Sayeed said, adding “both the parties have entered formed coalition without evolving consensus on vital issues”.
Addressing series of public meetings at R S Pura, Gole Gujral and Nanak Nagar in support of party candidate, Trilok Singh Bajwa, the former Chief Minister told the people that same opportunist alliance was responsible for the decade long bloodshed and destruction in the State. “Large scale rigging in 1987 assembly elections was the turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir”, he opined, adding, “the same National Conference-Congress alliance was ruling the state when elections were blatantly rigged and people were not allowed to elect representatives of their own choice”.
He, however, hastened to add that it was during the regime of PDP that peoples’ faith in democracy and democratic institutions was restored. He recalled his meeting with then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2001. “Unlike other political parties we did not demand any favour from Vajpayee but we asked him to conduct free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir”, he recalled, adding, “it was all due to the efforts of PDP that Vajpayee had made historical announcement from Red Fort to conduct free and fair elections in the State”.
Flaying the National Conference-Congress coalition for taking peoples’ problems casually, he pointed out that for the last three months the new regime has done nothing concrete to mitigate miseries of the masses. “This dispensation is visible only on papers but at grassroots level government has failed to implement any pro-people policy”, he observed.
Reminding the people about promises made by the National Conference leaders during assembly elections, he said that not even a single commitment has been so far translated into reality.
“On the one hand violation of human rights have been going unabated while on the other hand National Conference’s promise to provide stipend to educated unemployed youth remained only on papers”, he said and asked, “what happened to the commitment of bringing down educational qualification for recruitment of police constables to middle passes?”, he said and regretted that National Conference has betrayed people of Jammu and Kashmir for the lust of power.
Pointing towards joining of large number of people in the party during the last two months, Sayeed said that PDP has been emerged as biggest political force in the State. “Result of the 2008 assembly elections was a clear indication that this party has emerged as big force in the political scene of the State”, he said and made it clear that PDP has secured more votes than National Conference in Kashmir Valley
Party candidate Trilok Singh Bajwa, Daman Bhasin, Rangil Singh, Manjit Singh, Baldev Singh Slathia, Surjeet Kour, Jagjit Singh Jagga, A K Sawhney, Choudhary Chuni Lal, B D Gorkha, Som Nath, Rafiq Choudhary, Baldev Singh Pappa, R K Bali and Ashok Jogi also addressed these rallies.
