Islamic University to have skill center

JAMMU, April 09 – Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting here today to review the progress of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora.
The meeting was attended by Vice-Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Dr. Wahid Sidiq, Vice-Chairman Waqaf Board, Mr. M. Y. Qadri, Financial Commissioner, Planning, Mr. S. L. Bhat, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Mr. Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey and other senior officers.
A power-point presentation was made by the Vice Chancellor during the meeting. It was stated that Rs. 1.25-crore Skill Enhancement and Training centre (SET) is being completed by May 2009 and will be ready for occupation by August 2009. The centre will have language laboratory, audio visual studio for journalism, training halls, central library and two large classrooms.
It was further stated that the University plans to launch academic courses like integrated B. A/L. L. B. course, B. Tech in civil engineering during the academic year 2009-2010. The Rinchan Shah Centre for West Himalayan Cultures and the Mantaqi Centre for Basic Sciences will also start functioning.
It was stated that the new academic programmes will cost Rs. 2.60 crore.
The meeting was told that the Islamic University has succeeded in creating a unique work culture, a financial model for self-sufficiency and is likely to extend this learning into its first community outreach programme.
The university also envisages setting up of a college for 3-year courses in Bachelor in Elementary Education, B. Architecture, B. Com/Finance and B. Interior Designs, in collaboration with University of Delhi.
The meeting also discussed various matters relating to the construction programme, transfer of land and other related issues.
