5.82 lakh students in Kashmir to get mid-day meal:Manjit
Reviews progress in education sector

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 22 – As many as 6946 schools and 2513 education guarantee centres are being covered under Mid-day Meal scheme covering 5.82 lakh students during current year in Kashmir division. An amount of Rs 422.67 lakh has been provided as state share for the purpose.
This was stated by the Minister of State for Education and CAPD S. Manjit Singh at a meeting of education officers, he chaired today.
It was informed in the meeting that out of 160 primary school buildings taken up in hand 91 have been completed. Also 255 additional class rooms have been completed under NABARD in the division.
Regarding provision of textbooks to students, over 6 lakh students have been provided textbooks free of cost while 62000 students belonging to gujjar and bakarwal community have been provided scholarships, meeting was told.
As many as 2017 primary schools have opened, 1357 upgraded to the level of middle school and 2876 EGS centres established under SSA scheme during the last four years, besides 139 primary school buildings, 35 middle school buildings and 185 additional class rooms have been constructed under the District Plan. In addition 1115 primary school buildings, 286 middle school buildings and 1810 ACRs have been approved for construction during the current financial year.
The meeting was further informed that an amount of Rs 596 lakh has been approved as capital component of which Rs 414.75 lakh have been earmarked for ongoing and new works during current financial year. It was told that 181 middle schools were upgraded to the high schools and 134 high schools upgraded to the level of higher secondary schools in Kashmir province including Leh and Kargil.
Addressing the meeting, Minister stressed for early completion of all ongoing works and directed executing agencies to maintain quality of work at all costs.
Mr. Manjit Singh also emphasized for setting up of a separate monitoring cell to look after the education standard of the government educational institutions. He said that teachers and the management have to work vigorously to maintain the quality for education so that government education institutions are further improved.
Among others who were present in the meeting include Secretary Education Mr. K. M. Wani, Director School Education Mr. Mohammad Rafi, Project Director SSA Mr. K. R. Sambyal, Chief Education Officers of the province and other senior officers.
