| 15 candidates in fray for south Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, APR 9: Even though fifteen candidates have filed their nomination for the South Kashmir segment of Parliament, going to ballot on April 30, it is likely to be a direct contest between the candidates of People’s Democratic Party and National Conference. On Thursday, the last day for filing the nomination papers, 13 more candidates filed their papers. “A total of 15 candidates including Shiv Sena nominee have filed nomination papers for the seat,’’ an official said. While Congress supported National Conference candidate Mirza Mehboob Baig was among three candidates to have filed papers yesterday, Peer Mohammad Hussain of PDP was among the twelve to accomplish the task today, the last date for filling the nomination from the constituency. The 12 candidates who filed their nomination papers before District Development Commissioner Anantnag Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, who is the Returning Officer for the Lok Sabha seat, included Peer Mohammad Hussain of PDP, Nazir Ahmad Bhat, independent, Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai, Justice party, Rajeev Mahajan, Shiv Sena, Nissar Ahmad Khan, BSP, Ghulam Mohidin, RLD, Muhammad Sidiq Khan, Bhartiya Janta Party, Bashir Ahmad Malik, ANC, Mohammad Illiyas Kumar, independent, Mohammad Rafiq Wani, LJP, Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, SP, and Mohammad Aslam Mir of JDU. Apart from Mirza Mehboob Baig of NC, Asif Jeelani of AIFB and Bashir Ahmad Khan of Rajya Nawjawan Shakti Party filed their nomination papers on Wednesday. Although the notification for the Lok Sabha constituency was issued on April 2 the process of filing the nomination papers started only yesterday. The scrutiny of the papers will be held on April 10 while the last date of withdrawal of nominations is April 15 and the polling will be held on April 30. Soon after filing his nomination papers, the PDP candidate addressed a public meeting in Islamabad. In his speech, Peer lashed out rival National Conference and highlighted the policies of the parent party. Peer said that incase of being elected, he would try to accomplish PDP’s dream of implementing self rule besides make a fervent attempt to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and withdrawal of troops from the state.
