EARLY TIMES REPORT
Mendhar, Apr 9- Reiterating his resolve to restore sustainable peace in Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Minister and patron of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today asserted that with the support of the people his party would persuade both India and Pakistan to re-initiate the peace process and take concrete steps for the solution of Kashmir problem.
Addressing a mammoth public meeting in this town amidst down pours, Sayeed said that agenda of PDP was not to attain power but to establish lasting peace and tranquility in this region. “I remained Home Minister of the country as well as Chief Minister of State so achieving power is not my priority. One and the only agenda of PDP are to restore peace, with dignity and honour in this region and we would strive hard to achieve our goal”. “PDP has pioneered an agenda of reconciliation and peace process and we would carry forward those policies to remove uncertainty” he said.
"We want your support to carry forward our unaccomplished political and economic agenda which is aimed at changing fate of the inhabitants of this State", he said, adding, "the visionary measures of enormous political and economic significance taken by PDP led regime has yielded encouraging results as the prevailing peace on the border is result of those policies".
Reminding the people about situation which prevailed in the State in general and Poonch-Rajouri districts in particular, he said that human rights violation, crackdowns, humiliation and torture of the people was routine affairs before 2002. "After attaining the power, PDP led regime restored dignity and honour of the common masses by disbanding notorious STF and abolishing draconian laws like POTA", the former Chief Minister said, adding, “security forces were made accountable for any violation of rights and those found involved in human rights violation were brought to book”.
Terming National Conference-Congress alliance as total failure, the former Chief Minister said that 100 days progress report of this regime is “zero” as nothing concrete visible on grounds expect tall promises. “100 days is sufficient period for a government to start its work but this dispensation failed to take any step so far to solve day today problems of the common masses”, he observed and promises made by the National Conference during assembly elections remained only on papers.
“Enjoying power is the one and only aim of this opportunist alliance”, he said and recalled that it was same alliance that brazenly rigged assembly elections in 1987 and that act had shattered peoples’ faith in democracy and democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
PDP candidate Trilok Singh Bajwa, MLA Mendhar Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan, Bazi Muzaffar, Falail Singh, A K Sawhney, Bharat Shah, Farid, Nadeem Khan and others addressed the gathering.
Enthusiasm of the locals in this meeting can be gauged from the fact that braving hostile weather and heavy downs, large number of people turned up from far-flung areas to listen Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
