| Idea about to arrive in J&K; mobiles soar to over 28 lakhs | | | HAMAAD SALIF Jammu, Apr 9: To further intensify the cell-war, the Aditya Birla Group owned company Idea Cellular has worked out its strategy to launch its services in Jammu and Kashmir by this yearend or early next year. Upon its keenly awaited launch, Idea Cellular will be the seventh cell phone company to operate in Jammu and Kashmir. Interestingly, the race for cell-war in Jammu and Kashmir does not end here. Recently a UAE based company, in collaboration with an Indian company, has obtained licence for operating in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India. Jammu and Kashmir is seen by the cell phone companies as one of the most productive markets in India as tele-density is soaring at an alarming rate. While in terms of teledensity Jammu and Kashmir is counted among top five states in the country, this revolution picked up only after the launch of cellphone services in 2003. Even as the cellular phone arrived in Jammu and Kashmir some six years later than rest of the country, the six companies currently operating in the state have already secured a subscription base of more than 28 lakh connections. This huge teledensity is one of the highest in the country. The six service providers currently operating in Jammu and Kashmir are BSNL, Airtel, Airecel, Tata Indicom, Vodafone and Reliance. Airtel is reported to be the largest subscribed cellular service in Jammu and Kashmir. Now impressed by growth of existing players, the telecom operator Idea Cellular is set to cover eight districts of J&K initially. According to a top company executive Idea Cellular will hopefully roll out its services in J&K within six months. He said that a careful strategy is being chalked out for J&K which is largely captured by Airtel followed by BSNL. IDEA Cellular Ltd, which is a GSM mobile services operator with over 41 million subscribers, has strengthened its position in Punjab after acquiring Spice Telecommunications. Having a market share of 18 % in Punjab, Idea has 2.4 million subscribers in the state. To further improving its network base in the state, the company will add 1,000 telecom towers before March 2010 reaching a total to 4,000 towers. It may be noted here that the company has licenses and spectrum to operate in all 22 service areas of India, with commercial operations in 15 service areas, currently.
