LPU triumphs in 2024-25 Weightlifting Championships

JALANDHAR, Jan 22: Jalandhar, Lovely Professional University (LPU) hosted weightlifting championships that brought together top athletes from across the nation. The All India Inter University (AIIU) Men's Weightlifting Championship 2024-25 and North East Zone Inter University Women's Weightlifting Championship 2024-25 showcasing the immense talent and strength of young weightlifters in India. LPU dominated the event by emerging as champions in both the Weightlifting Championships.
The AIIU Men's Weightlifting Championship saw participation from players across 80 universities, with a total of 320 men competing. LPU emerged as the winner of this highly competitive championship, securing an impressive 3 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals, and 1 Bronze Medal. The athletes who led LPU to victory were Shubham (Gold), Yoginder (Gold), Gagandeep Gill (Gold), GolumTinku (Silver), Komal Karthik (Silver), and Himanshu Thapa (Bronze). Mangalore University finished as the first runner-up, while Savitribai Phule Pune University stood in the second runner-up position. Furthermore, 10 weightlifting athletes from LPU have qualified to participate in the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, marking a significant milestone in sporting excellence.
The NEIZU Women's Weightlifting Championship drew participation from 40 universities and 250 women athletes across Northern India. Once again, LPU emerged victorious, securing 3 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal. The winners included Reena (Gold), Rima Bhoi (Gold), and Swati Yadav (Gold), while Bornali earned the Silver Medal. Punjab University and Punjabi University claimed the first and second runner-up positions, respectively. Notably, all 10 weightlifting athletes from LPU have qualified to participate in the All India Inter University Women's Championship 2024-2025, set to be held at Himachal Pradesh University.
The event's chief guest, Er. HR Singla, Director General of LPU, applauded all the athletes for their hard work and outstanding performances in both men's and women's weightlifting. Er. Singla also reiterated LPU's commitment to nurturing talent and providing world-class facilities to support the growth of student-athletes, reinforcing the university's position as a leader in sports development.
The tournaments demonstrated not only the strength and excellence of the male athletes but also the remarkable rise of female athletes in the sport. All the weightlifters showcased incredible determination and skill, underlining the growing importance and appeal of weightlifting as a competitive sport in India.
