Survey returns UPA to power but Advani best PM bet
UPA to get 234 seats, NDA 186: assessment

New Delhi, April 09: The UPA is expected to get 234 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with Congress emerging as the single largest party with 144 seats, according to a countrywide survey conducted for 'The Week' magazine.
The survey has projected 186 seats for the Opposition NDA with BJP being victorious on 140 seats, while the Third Front will be cornering 112 seats.
The Week/CVoter survey projected senior BJP leader L K Advani as the best choice for the post of Prime Minister with the backing of 15 per cent of those interviewed followed closely by incumbent Manmohan Singh, who found favour with 14 per cent participants.
Eleven per cent of those interviewed felt that Congress president Sonia Gandhi was the best choice for the Prime Minister's post, followed by Rahul Gandhi (10 per cent), BSP supremo Mayawati (nine per cent) and Atal Bihari Vajpayee (eight per cent).
Among the UPA ranks, Congress has been predicted to win 144 seats followed by Samajwadi Party (32), NCP (13), DMK and allies (13), Trinamool Congress (11), RJD-LJP (15), UDF (two), National Conference (three) and JMM (one).
In the NDA, the BJP is projected to win 140 seats followed by JD(U) (18), Shiv Sena (12), Asom Gana Parishad (five), Akali Dal (five), RLD (four) and INLD (two).
Among the Third Front, Left parties are projected to win 33 seats followed by BSP (29), AIADMK and allies (24), TDP/TRS (14), BJD (nine), JDS (two), HVM (one), Chiranjeevi's fledgling PRP (two) and others nine.
According to the survey, 37 per cent of those interviewed felt Congress-led UPA can handle issues before the nation better than the NDA. Only 27 per cent supported the NDA.
Fourteen per cent participants felt that the Third Front could handle issues better, while an equal number felt none of the three combinations were good at it. Eight per cent were undecided.
As many as 21 per cent participants felt the economic slowdown and inflation were the key electoral issues. 17 per cent felt it was internal security and terrorism, 14 per cent saw corruption as a significant issue, while a mere one per cent thought the Indo-US nuclear deal to be a major poll plank.
The UPA's handling of price rise and inflation ranked at the top of the list of "failures" (32 per cent), followed by its tackling of terrorism and national security issues (26 per cent), "compromise" with the US (10 per cent) and rising crime against women (nine per cent).
As many as 19 per cent participants felt the farm loan waiver was the key achievement of the UPA followed by NREGA (18 per cent), economic growth (16 per cent), political stability (16 per cent) and nuclear deal (14 per cent).

The Week magazine conducted a countrywide survey conducted for the projected results in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, and the issues that matter the most. Following is the result of the survey:
