The expansion plan involves addition of about 494 Base Transreceiver stations (BTS), Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura told reporters here today. BSNL will be able to provide mobile connections on demand with improved coverage and quality, he added. The total number of BTSs, the equipment which facilitates communication between a network and a cellphone, would be 1,140 at the end of 2009-10, Behura said, adding that as on April 1, 2009, there are four mobile switching centres (MSC) with 646 BTSs and 8.34 lakh working connections in the state. The Telecom Secretary said that BSNL is setting up next generation BTSs to provide 3G services in Srinagar. "Installation of 3G BTSs in Srinagar is under progress and is planned to be completed by the end of current month." Behura said the total number of BTSs planned in Srinagar is 178 for which 145 existing sites will be used and 33 new sites will be set up which will improve the services. Further, he refuted the allegation that BSNL connections are misused by militants saying "violators of law are not confined to BSNL only but they do misuse services being provided by other companies"
