GGM Science College Jammu honors Late Wazir Mohd Hakla Poonchi

JAMMU, Feb 2: In a significant tribute to the contributions of Late Wazir Mohd Hakla Poonchi, Govt. Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College, Jammu, has displayed his portrait along with the postal stamp issued in his honor. The initiative, undertaken under the directives of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, aims to inspire students with his legacy of service, patriotism, and dedication to social upliftment.
The photographs were officially handed over to the Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr) Romesh Kumar Gupta, by Mr. Shamsher Hakla Poonchi, in the presence of faculty members Dr. Narinder Kumar, Dr. Ashaq Hussain, and Dr. Mohd Maqeem. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gupta highlighted Hakla's immense contributions as a nationalist leader, philosopher, writer, and intellectual. He played a crucial role in strengthening communal harmony and worked tirelessly for the welfare of marginalized communities. His patriotic contributions during the 1965 and 1971 wars remain exemplary.
Shamsher Hakla Poonchi recalled that in recognition of his invaluable service, the Government of India approved a postal stamp in his honor. The Ministry of Communications, Department of Posts, Philatelic Division sanctioned this initiative during a meeting held on July 25, 2022, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, chaired by Hon'ble Minister of State for Communications, Shri Devusinh Chauhan. The stamp was officially released on July 24, 2024, at Raj Bhawan, Srinagar, by Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Shri Manoj Sinha.
The display of his portrait and the commemorative postal stamp at GGM Science College serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy, inspiring students to follow his path of dedication and service to the nation.
