| Fishermen get financial assistance | | | Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, APRIL 11 (INFO)-Fourteen fishermen of District Udhampur were given financial assistance amounting to Rs.20,000 each for construction of low cost houses under centrally sponsored “Welfare of Fishermen for the year-2008-09” at a simple function held in the premises of Department of Fisheries on Saturday. District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria handed over individual cheques to the beneficiaries hailing from different blocks of district which include five beneficiaries from Udhampur block, one each from Ramnagar, Panchari and Majalta, two from Dudu-Basantgarh and four of Chenani block. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Khajuria exhorted upon the officers of Fisheries Department to explore possibilities for setting up of fish ponds in different areas of the district to generate the economic activity for the poor people especially living in remote belts of the district. He also instructed Assistant Director, Fisheries Udhampur to identify a piece of land nearby Udhampur area to set up a fish pond. The DDC also called upon the fishermen present on the occasion to come forward and avail maximum benefits under different state and centrally schemes of the department. Giving the brief resume of the departmental activities, the Assistant Director, Fisheries, Mr. Gopal Krishan apprised that 14 houses have been constructed in the district under the centrally sponsored welfare of fishermen scheme for the year 2008-09 by incurring a total expenditure of Rs.5.60 lakh. He further said that most deserving beneficiaries of the district have been selected to avail benefit under the scheme. Later, the DDC also interacted with the fishermen and enquired about their profession. Among others, Chief Planning Officer, Udhampur, Mr. Hari Har Dutt was also present on the occasion.
