| Kathua farmers demand popularization of improved Basmati | | | Early Times Report KATHUA, APRIL 11 (INFO)-A number of farmers of Billawar Sub Division of Kathua district apprised the Director, Agriculture Jammu Mrs Vindo Bala Sharma of their difficulties and demands in the area. They asked for adequate stocking of improved and certified seeds of Basmati Rice in the sub division as most of them were shifting now from cultivation of the traditionally grown coarse varieties. They demanded development of multi crop nurseries in the area to meet the requirement of improved high yielding and hybrid vegetable and flower seedlings besides plant material for watershed areas, etc. The Director interacted with the farmers on prevailing crop weather situation in the area, impact of recent rains after the prolonged dry spell, availability of inputs for Kharif season and other relevant issues. She was apprised that 35 to 45 percent loss was anticipated because of adverse weather conditions. She assured the farmers that field officers of the department are being pressed into service to collect a detailed report on damage to crops due to adverse weather conditions for further follow up action. The Director inspected Seed Multiplication Farm Dungara, feeding channel from Ujh Irrigation Canal which is lying closed for repairs, seed and other input stores, Soil Conservation Nursery at Thara Kalyal wher Nappier, Vetiver and other fodder and grasses for soil and water conservation have been planted for multiplication and spread. She directed the staff of the department to develop and make full potential utilization of the invaluable departmental assets and resources such as the seed multiplication farms, nurseries, sale outlets and moreover, the human resource in extension activities so that the department is enabled to provide desired services to the farming community in an efficient manner.
