| ERO delivers lecture on proxy voting to Army personnel | | | Early Times Report Udhampur Apr 11- To educate the Army officers and jawans about the concept of postal ballots and proxy voting, the Electoral Registration Officer (Assistant Commissioner, Revenue), Udhampur, Rajesh Sharma delivered a detailed lecture at Dhruva Auditorium in Army cantonment area, near here on Saturday. Over 500 Officers and Jawans of Army participated in the session. Through his power point presentation, Sharma explained in length about proxy and postal ballot voting which was only allowed to Army men, a member of an Armed Police Force of a State, posted outside the State and a person employed under the Government of India in a post outside India. He said armed personnel have two options either to vote through proxy voting or by postal ballot. He said that the vote was the basic right in democratic set up, adding that there were 25 lakh members of the Armed Forces and a substantial number of families residing with them. “Service voters were a block of voters who need to have a greater understanding of the issues that affect our Nation. So voting was a bigger responsibility of the Service Voters”, he asserted. The other aspects available to a Service Voter include enrollment, need for postal ballots, postal ballot process, proxy nomination and formats required to be filled in by the Service Voter were explained in detail. Feed back was also received by the Electoral Registration Officer about the difficulties faced by the service voters in getting their names registered in their respective districts. During the session, the Army officers and jawans were encouraged to go for proxy voting so that their right to franchise was not frittered away. He also interacted with them and cleared their doubts about the process of registration of their names and other difficulties being faced by them.
