Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 11- Minister for Law, Finance and Parliamentary Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather has said that the performance of Excise and Commercial Taxes Departments is vital for ensuring financial stability of the State and added that achieving better revenue realization would be the benchmark for judging the performance of its officers.
The Minister said this during a review meeting of the officers of the Excise Department, here this morning.
Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Sudhanshu Pandey, Excise Commissioner, Pradeep Gupta, Special Secretary, Finance, M. L. Koul and all the Deputy Excise Commissioners were present in the meeting
Emphasizing that there would be no interference from any quarter in dissemination of professional duties, the Minister said that he would personally monitor the functioning of every officer and in case of any laxity in revenue realization, stringent action will be taken.
Referring to the scope for improvement in revenue realization Finance Minister said the target of Rs. 560 crore set for the year 2009-10 could be achieved.
Asking the officers to set high standards in public relations while discharging their duties, Rather emphasized that there is need to plug gaps that lead to allegations of red-tape in government departments that generally result in uncalled for delays and inconvenience to the general public. “Such perception needs to be changed in present times when the government has opted for customer-friendly set up”, the Minister added.
Gupta, while giving a detailed power-point presentation on the achievements of the department, informed the Minister that the department has realized revenue of Rs. 517 crore during the last fiscal which includes Rs. 245.49 crore under Excise and Rs. 271.73 crore under Toll head.
He further said that a Toll Plaza with modern facilities is being constructed by JKPCC at Lakhanpur at an estimated cost of Rs. 32.20 crore, adding that another Toll Post at Nagri, Kathua is also under construction by R&B at an estimated cost of Rs. 8.85 crore. The government has already allotted Rs. 3.38 crore for the purpose.
The meeting was informed that the department also proposes to set up a state-of-the-art training institute at erstwhile Toll Post at Nagrota for imparting training to new recruits as well as in-service executive staff of both Excise and Commercial Taxes departments.
