Khalid Bashir’s book telling ‘story of Kashmir through flow of Jhelum’ released

Srinagar, Apr11-The first book telling the story of Kashmir through the flow of its main river, the Jhelum, was launched today at the valley’s century old educational institution, S. P. College. Intellectuals, poets, writers, artists and academics formed the gathering that had assembled to witness the release of the book in Urdu titled, Deeda-e-Aab-e-Rawan (Through the Eyes of Flowing Water).
The book is authored by well known writer and poet, Khalid Bashir Ahmad, currently Director Information and Public Relations in the J&K Government. The River is the central character in the book round which revolves various facets of the beautiful valley of Kashmir.
Prof. Muhammad Ashraf Wani of Department of History, University of Kashmir released the book while former Vice Chancellor of the University and noted Urdu poet and critic, Prof Hamidi Kashmiri presided over the function. Jnanpeeth awardee and famous Kashmiri poet, Rehman Rahi was the guest of honour and Prof. G. R. Malik read a paper on the book. Javed Azar, writer and Executive Editor of leading Urdu newspaper, Kashmir Uzma, read an introductory paper on the author.
The book speaks about the Valley’s mythology, history, culture, literature and economy in the backdrop of the leisurely flowing waters of the River Jhelum through the landscape of Kashmir. It gives complete history of floods and bridge construction in Kashmir since BC era and talks about important and interesting events of the Valley’s history and culture connected with the Jhelum including the battles fought on the banks of the river, prominently the one between Alexander the Great and King Porus. The flow of events in the book is complimentary to that of the river and sustains the interest of a reader. The book is a thoroughly researched work and has caught the eye of scholars of Kashmir studies.
Prof Malik described the work as tour de force and complemented the author. Prof. Hamidi was eloquent in his praise for the content and style of the prose even as Prof. Rehman Rahi described the book as a creative surprise.
Khalid Bashir Ahmad has also penned two poetic collections, Sada-e-Neem Shab (The Midnight Call) and Khawab Parah (Slice of a Dream) that have won him award and wide appreciation from literary circles.
