| women missing from J&k Poll scene | | | Early Times Report Srinagar: Contrary to the claims of all major political parties to give 33 per cent reservation to women candidates in Lok Sabha seats, only two fairer sex contestants are in fray for the three parliamentary seats in the state. While there is a single woman candidate in fray for each of the two parliamentary segments in Jammu division, there is no female among 13 contestants in the south Kashmir Lok sabha seat. According to reports , there are 21 candidates in fray from Jammu-Poonch seat with lone woman contestant, Shakeela Bano. Among the 14 candidates in fray for the Udhampur-Doda segment, there is also a single woman contestant in the shape of Kanchan Sharma. For the two Lok Sabha seats in Jammu, no woman candidate has ever represented the constituencies, while from the south Kashmir seat, Mehbooba Mufti even made it to the parliament, defeating his nearest National Conference rival Dr. Mehboob being by a telling margin. In the last elections in 2004, 26 candidates including a woman contested on Jammu-Poonch seat while among the 20 contestants on Udhampur-Doda seat, there was no woman candidate in the fray. However, the woman candidates who fought the election from Jammu seats in last election could only garner 2000 votes. The fairer sex also failed to break the 36 year-old-jinx record in state assembly despite 67 of them contested to try their luck in the election. Even after the larger number, only three women could make it to the assembly, that too all from the Kashmir region only. While two of the elected Sakina Itoo and Shamima Firdous, represent the National Conference the other candidate who made it to state’s lower house includes Mehbooba Mufti, who even has the sobriquet of being the first women opposition leader. It was in 1972 that four women were elected to the legislature, which still remains the highest figure for women MLAs in the state. Zainab Begum, Hajra Begum, Shanta Bharti and Nirmala Devi made it to the assembly then while four other female contestants – Khem Lata Wakhloo, Amina Begum, Hassan Ara Begum and Misra Bano – lost their security deposits after getting very few votes.
