Early Times Report
Srinagar: National Conference, major ally in the ruling coalition, is likely to announce the candidates for the two parliamentary constituencies besides as many as by-election assembly seats on Sunday, sources told .

After settling the decks with Congress over Ladakh, the party has already nominated Dr Mehboob Beig who filed his nomination papers from South Kashmir parliamentary constituency, going to ballot on April 30.

Sources said that after consulting the leaders from Baramulla, Kupwara, Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal, the party president and patron Farooq Abdullah will preside over the parliamentary board— the highest decision making body— meeting on Sunday to take the final decision.

Sources told that the consolation meetings discussed all pros and cons of fielding a particular candidate.

Even though the final nominations will be made by the Farooq Abdullah, sources said that the names that are doing the rounds for north Kashmir’s Baramulla-Kupwara constituency are that of Abdul Rashid Shaheen, Mustafa Kamal and Sharief-ud-din Shariq. The trio of Shaheen, Kamaal and Shariq had lost in the recently held assembly elections from Pattan, Tangmarg and Langate respectively.

The north Kashmir seat is scheduled to go for polls in the last round of the five phased elections on May 13.

The Election Commission is also yet to announce the notification for the seat which is going to polls alongside with Ladakh parliamentary segment.

About the Srinagar seat, sources said that a former bureaucrat Sheikh Ghulam Rasool is a most probable candidate.

The Election commission on Saturday issued the notification for the penultimate phase of the election for the Srinagar-Budgam constituency, going to polls on May 07.

National Conference will also announce the candidates for the two by-election assembly seats of Hazratbal and Sonwar in Srinagar district.

Pertinently, the parliamentary board meeting was slated to be held in the last week but was delayed in view of the absence of senior Abdullah who under went a minor surgery in New Delhi.
