| ‘Chandi Ka Chamcha’ staged in Natrang’s Sunday Theatre | | | Early Times report Jammu, Apr 12- ‘Chandi Ka Chamcha’- a short play in Hindi written by the eminent playwright and theatre director Habeeb Tanveer was presented here today in Natrang’s weekly theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre’ under the direction of Balwant Thakur. This is perhaps one of the earlier plays of Habeeb Tanveer which he wrote to sensitize and educate the masses about sanitation. Set at a street corner, the play focuses on the life of a crowded city inhabitation where people living in a neighborhood have created hell for themselves by throwing garbage on streets. The sewerage system is not functional due to the blockades and no one is ready to take any initiative to find out a way to get rid from that filthy life. Everyone is concerned about the sanitation of their respective homes and the lanes are being virtually used as dust-bins. In the backdrop of this plot, the director Balwant Thakur adapted the play to Jammu’s old city life and the sanitation culture of the people of Jammu living in narrow lanes. Daya Ram a street vender is being forced to close his mobile shop as he is finding extremely difficult to find safe place in his lane, where he could settle his mobile shop goods for sale. The moment he opens his shop, the filth is thrown on his goods. The sewerage lines are blocked with the polythene and the stinking lanes are full of mud. A young boy who had just returned from England tells lot of stories of the people West and their cleanliness habits. But nothing moves the people of the area and their wrong doings. Suddenly he flashes news in the area that he has seen some silver spoons flowing in the sewerage lines. Every inhabitant of the area including the women and children come out and start searching the lanes and the sewerage lines. They are further advised to clean the area properly so they may not loose the chance of getting the silver spoons. The filth is cleared, the garbage is thrown out but there are no spoons. After having the feel of a clean aspiring environment everyone realizes that this was more rewarding than the silver spoons. Rohit Verma played the role of poor vender in a highly realistic manner. The role of foreign returned was ably played by Rahul Singh who was supported by Hemant Bholla, Divya Kohli, and Anita Dhar. Among others who participated in the play included Vinod Khajuria, Aman Khullar and Durga Deeep Singh. Gaurav Jamwal designed and executed the lights and the music of the play was scored by Mohit Sharma. Mohd. Yaseen did the sets.
