| Congress made its days | | | early Times Report Jammu, Apr 12: Congress runs alliance governments in various states but the national party would never have enjoyed anything as it has bargained with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir over past 100 days. It is the story of a younger brother calling shots on the elder because he is taller in height. If the precedence set by the Congress continued for few more years the National Conference may well be seen wanting for the answers on how not rule in alliances. As the coalition government completes its three months in office, the Congress appears to have walked more than three years on its political consolidation in Jammu and Kashmir and it is still looking high to ride on NC’s back. In a House of 87, National Conference has 28 members (when alliance was formed) and the Congress 17. With these statistics the National Conference should have got three of the four vacant Rajya Sabha seats leaving one to the Congress. However, the intelligent Congress, which is seen in a political haste in Jammu and Kashmir, forced the NC to share the seats equally. More interestingly, the Congress leaders Saifuddin Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad bagged the Rajya Sabha seats without facing any contest leaving the National Conference to do negotiations with two independents and one Panthers Party legislator. It was a tough situation for the National Conference which it had to manage through dinner diplomacies and later night meetings of the Chief Minister with independent MLAs. In filling up the vacancies for Legislative Council, the Congress again played a big brother and left National Conference brooding. What makes everyone to see National Conference in red is the manner in which the Congress forces the major partner to equally share the Lok Sabha constituencies. In doing this, the National Conference has ‘awarded’ with the seats where it is at a weak pitch at two of the three constituencies and Congress has claimed three quite safe seats. While the alliance is expected to go a long way, the real beneficiary in Jammu and Kashmir over past three years has certainly been the Congress.
