| Devika Baisakhi Mela begins at Udhampur, locals demand flyover | | | Sarita Jamwal Udhampur Apr 13- The District Development Commissioner, Ajay Khajuria today inaugurated the 3-day historic Devika Baishaki Mela on the banks of holy rivulet in Udhampur town. Speaking on the occasion, Khajuria extended his warm geetings and good wishes to the people on this auspicious Baisakhi day and hoped that the festival would be celebrated with fervour and gaiety which would further help in strengthening the communal harmony and brotherhood. He also threw light on the religious sanctity of Devika rivulet as well as importance of this mela which is being celebrated here on the banks of Devika from times immemorial. He also apprised about the facilities being extended on the mela site to the visiting devotees by the district administration. He further said that district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the mela like uninterrupted power, safe drinking water, sanitation, medicare, Police Control Room, assistance both and security have been made at the mela site, besides various departments like Agriculture, Horticulture, Health, National Rural Health Mission, Apiculture, Handicraft, Handloom and Animal Husbandry have put up their departmental stall to educate the masses about various state and centrally sponsored schemes especially for socio- economic upliftment. Number of temporary sweet shops, toy shops and other eatable shops put up by the locals as well as outside vendors are the main attraction for the general public visiting the mela site. Out numbered children were seen enjoying the courageous act of motor cyclist, driving bikes in the death well. The 3- day Baisakhi mela would culminate with free style wrestling match in which number of wrestlers from within and outside the state are expected to participate. Meanwhile, Local residents of Udhampur and NGO’S have sought over fly bridge on Jammu Srinagar National Highway near historical Davika Shrine to overcome growing accidents. Local residents showing great concern over increasing road mishaps in the area have demanded deployment of traffic police personnel near Davika crossing till the construction of fly over bridge, especially during school time and at peak hours. According to local resident Bunty Sharma due to absence of over fly over bridge on highway near Davika people in general are facing great problem who often visit at Lord Shiva temple to pay obeisance every day and those who come here to perform last rites at Davika cremation ground .He added that majority of population, number of educational institutions and government offices are on both sides of national highway but due to absence of fly over bridge it is great risky for School children to cross busiest national highway every day . He added that the buses that come from Kashmir, Jammu and other parts of state and local mini buses too halt on the NH, thus creating problems for the pedestrians, especially small children and aged people find it very difficult to reach the other side without support, he said Vice president IDHRO NGP Sarita and SRCO Parvesh Kumar said that there is no zebra crossing even on road. To make matters worse, no traffic policeman is deployed at the most busiest crossing on highway. She said this issue had been raised several times with the District administration, but of no avail. Local residents have threatened to hold a demonstration if their demand for a flyover was not met soon.
